In addition, the university was awarded 2 first prizes and 23 second prizes for teaching achievements countrywide in the year of 2001 and 2005.

In the next five years, Zhejiang University aims to establish an undergraduate education system that meets the criteria of first-rate comprehensive research university worldwide by furthering interdisciplinary education in humanities, science and engineering. The undergraduate education is to be conducted in two periods. The early period focuses on basic general education, during which the university actively explores new talent-training models, strengthens talent-training programs, and selects top students for elite education. The late period focuses on interdisciplinary studies and intensive specialized education to cultivate creative talents by implementing undergraduate-master program and undergraduate-PhD program, as well as programs for minor studies, double-specialty/degree studies, international exchange and overseas study.

Meanwhile, Zhejiang University will further optimize the curricular grouping to establish an excellent research-oriented curricular system which meets the international criteria and integrates with further graduate studies. The general education courses emphasize students’ improvement in overall quality by widening their perspectives on history, society and the whole world; the platform courses stress on developing and broadening students’ basic knowledge so as to lay a solid foundation for their further development; the specialized courses attach great importance to developing students’ professional knowledge as well as their capability and originality. Besides, students are left with certain credits for self-regulated study to formulate their interdisciplinary and diversified knowledge structure.

Undergraduate education furthermore aims to improve students’ abilities in self -regulation and research-oriented studies by adopting research-based teaching methods and small class seminars. The faculty keeps students updated on the latest development in their specific fields to cultivate their pioneering spirit and creative capability. It sends undergraduates abroad for international exchange to develop their international vision and competitiveness.

As the Zhejiang University Anthem goes, “Pride of nation, Zhejiang University”, and “Youth of promise, train for this mission”. Zhejiang University is committed to establish the first-rate undergraduate education so as to become one of the most prestigious universities worldwide.

Education Model

Abiding by its historical motto of “Seeking Truth and Promoting Innovation”, adopting student-centered approach and interdisciplinary education policy, Zhejiang University has gradually developed its undergraduate education model featuring 3M (multi-specification, multi-channel, modularity) and “KAQ” (knowledge, ability and quality). It divides 112 undergraduate majors into several platforms and carries out two-phase education model, with the earlier phase for general education and the later for intensive specialized education. This model is designed to establish a research-oriented undergraduate curricular system.

Since its implementation of credit system in 2002, Zhejiang University has formulated and later revised its guidelines of undergraduate education and relevant documents for teaching and academic services, developed modern educational administration system network, and established the teaching management model. Centered on the course-selecting system and assisted by flexible academic year, major and minor specialty program, and tutor system, the new model entitles students more freedom to decide their majors, curricula, tutors and study process, and creates favorable conditions for promoting self-regulated studies and interdisciplinary talents training.

In the autumn of 2004, Zhejiang University began the quarter system—the whole academic year is divided into spring, summer, autumn and winter semesters. It is a significant step to carry out the talent-training program and push forward an overall reform in teaching, research and internal management. The implementation of the quarter system promotes teaching reform with credit system as its core, optimizes curricular structure and encourages effective teaching methods so that students can better regulate their study process and learn more efficiently. It also aims to create favorable conditions for teachers to integrate their teaching with researching work.
